Charles Philipps
Group Chief Executive

Appointed Group Chief Executive in 1999,having joined the Board as Group Finance Director in 1997. Chartered Accountant. He represented Amlin Corporate Member Limited on the Council of Lloyd’s from 2001 to January 2007. He was adirector of the Lloyd’s Market Association from 2003 and a Vice Chairman from 2004, in each case until May 2007. He is President of The Insurance Institute of London, having served on its Council since 2004.  He was previously a director of NatWest Markets Corporate Finance Limited until 1997, having been employed there from 1983.  Whilst at NatWest Markets he was responsible for the formation and flotation on the London Stock Exchange of Angerstein Underwriting Trust PLC (which became Amlin plc).
Richard Hextall
Group Finance Director

Appointed Group Finance Director in 1999. Chartered Accountant. He has been a director of the Lloyd’s Market Association since May 2007 and a member of its Finance Committee since 2002, serving as Chairman of the committee from 2005 to December 2007. He was a member of the Lloyd’s Investment Committee from 2003 to May 2007. He has been an independent non-executive director of The City of London Investment Trust PLC since November 2007. He joined Amlin from Deloitte & Touche, where he was a director specialising in the insurance and financial services sector.
Brian Carpenter
Underwriting Director, Amlin UK 

Appointed a Director in 2000. He is head of the Amlin Insurance Services division of Syndicate 2001, which comprises the Group’s UK motor, property and liability businesses. He has been a member of the Lloyd’s Market Association’s Motor Committee since 1989 and was a member of the Lloyd’s Market Board from 2000 to 2002 and of the Business Development Unit Board at Lloyd’s from 1997 to 2000. Prior to joining the Group in 1989 as active underwriter of motor Syndicate 887 (now part of Syndicate 2001) he worked as a broker with Sedgwick and Marsh.
Simon Beale
Underwriting Director, Amlin London

Appointed head of Amlin Coles Division, at the time of the restructuring in October 2000. He also joined the Board of Amlin Underwriting Limited in 2000. He had previously been responsible for the marine business on the then KJ Coles syndicate having joined the Murray Lawrence Group in 1994. Simon has been in the Lloyd's marine market since 1984.
Rod Dampier
Head of Aviation, Amlin London


Rod joined Amlin in 1997 after spending 30 years in the Company market in London, culminating in the position of Senior Underwriter at the BAIG from 1991 to 1997. He has broad experience in all classes and business, and has been able to enhance the Division’s leading position in the market a result of his long-standing contacts with the broking community and their clients. Rod is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, an Associate Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of the LMA Board and Aviation Committee.
Mark Farrow
Group Human Resources Director


Appointed Group HR Director when he joined the Group in July 2001. Previously, he was HR Director with AXA PPP Healthcare having worked on major re-structuring programmes to prepare the PPP Healthcare business for sale and subsequently managing two integration programmes following the acquisitions by Guardian Royal Exchange (1998) and AXA (1999). Prior to AXA PPP Healthcare he worked in a variety of senior HR and Personnel roles with ICI and Kimberly-Clark. Mark is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel & Development.

David Harris
Managing Director, Amlin Underwriting

Joined Amlin in February 2003 and a Director of Amlin Underwriting Limited since March 2005. Commenced his career with Royal Insurance and after a number of senior appointments became Operations Director for the Royal Sun Alliance London Market Business. Subsequently he joined AXA Insurance as their UK Claims Manager. He is a Bachelor of Law (LLB) and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and has studied at both Cranfield and INSEAD.

James Illingworth
Group Chief Risk Officer

Joined the board of Amlin Underwriting Limited in October 1998, following the merger of the Murray Lawrence Group and Angerstein Underwriting Trust PLC. Chairman of Amlin Underwriting from July 1999 to April 2000. Elected to Lloyds Underwriting Agents Association in July 2000. Member of the LMA Risk Management Committee. Joined Angerstein in 1997 having been managing director of Stace Barr Insurance Capital, a Lloyd’s advisory company, and became a Director of Angerstein Underwriting Trust PLC in 1998 until its merger with the Murray Lawrence Group. Commenced his career at reinsurance broker Greig Fester (now Benfield Greig), where he worked for 8 years.
Charles Pender
Group Company Secretary


Appointed Group Company Secretary, including Secretary of Amlin plc, in 2000, having previously served as Deputy Group Company Secretary since 1998. Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators since 2003 (Associate from 2001) and of the Securities Institute since 1992. Director / trustee of LSF Pensions Management Ltd. and of another Amlin pension scheme. Joined the Group in 1997 from NatWest Markets, where he was an Associate Director in the corporate finance department. Formerly a corporate stockbroker with Wood Mackenzie & Co, and a member of the London Stock Exchange from 1986.
Jayne Styles
Chief Investment Officer

Jayne joined Amlin in September 2002 as Chief Investment Officer. Jayne was Head of International Equities when she left Halifax Fund Management Limited at the end of 2000. Whilst at HFML she established and ran a wide range of portfolios. Prior to joining Amlin she had been working as an independent management consultant advising a number of blue chip companies, whilst completing an Executive MBA at Cranfield University School of Management. Jayne is also a Member of the UK Society of Investment Professionals, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Management.
